A check compares one party against your enabled sanctions lists. A party is a person, company or vessel, meaning a ship or aircraft. For example, uploading an invoice that names one customer, two managing directors and a freight forwarder involves four parties and therefore four checks.
For comparison: under Section 18(1) of the German Foreign Trade Act (AWG), breaching sanctions and the making-available prohibition is a criminal offence punishable by three months to five years in prison, or six months to ten years in particularly serious cases (Section 18(6a) AWG). Companies may additionally face a corporate fine, up to €40 million for intentional breaches (Section 19(7) AWG). Managing directors may be personally liable for up to €1 million (Section 130(3) of the German Administrative Offences Act (OWiG)).
